Most of all I love freedom. I want to be free and not to obey any limitations. One of them I hate the most is the locality - the dependence of the place you are living at the moment. I want to be free to travel whenever and wherever I decide to go and not to be held back by document folders, paper, heavy desktop PCs, etc. I don’t want to be location dependent.
You are location dependent if:
Your main computer is a desktop PC or Mac.
Your documents are put in folders in your cabinet.
Your organizer is a 300-page notebook with dates and calendars. Your notes are written on countless yellow stickies.
Your e-mail client is desktop based.Your news is delivered by newspapers.Almost all of these problems can easily be solved by one single power. This is the power of Google.
As we all know Google offers a lot of services. More of them are useful, and others are stupid. But there are six services/tools that are crucial for you to become a location independent person. I recommend this lifestyle. What do you need in order to be location independent?
You need:
1. Location Independent COMMUNICATION
Gmail is a very good e-mail service. It is free and it is easy to use. You can eliminate all other e-mail accounts and start using only one - the Gmail account. This way you can check your e-mail from every computer in the world which has internet connection enabled.
2. Location Independent INFORMATION SOURCE
A year ago I was using Feedburner and I didn’t like the Google Reader. Now, skipping its obvious shortcomings, I consider this Google service as one of the most useful. Using the reader you can manage folders and RSS subscriptions. This way you will be loaded with up-to-date information wherever you are online.
3. Location Independent ORGANIZER
You should have a global solution for scheduling tasks and appointments. Google Calendar is a dynamic solution, very similar to iCal of Apple. It is interactive and very easy to use. You have different views - day, week, and month. It is a fully functional calendar and you can use it anywhere.
4. Location Independent DOCUMENTS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Google Docs & Spreadsheets is a little bit slower than I would like it to be, but it is location independent, it is free, and it has almost the full functionality required by a powerful office software pack. Here you can create and modify documents and spreadsheets. You can tag them and sort them in folders. Export/Import options are also available. So you can continue writing your new book about pay-per-click marketing on the table of Starbucks in Bacelona looking through the window to the crowds on Las Ramblas.
5. Location Independent NOTEBOOK
Google Notebook is one extremely useful online tool. I use it daily and I like it very much. Everyone of us need a system to record and manage their ideas, notes, thoughts, phone numbers, descriptions, links, etc. Here you can create a lot of notebooks. Every notebook can have a lot of sections in it. Every section can have notes. And for every note you can add comments. This is a deep structure and you can use it for many purposes as: to-do lists, diary, notes, ideas records, personal goals and planning and so on. And the beauty here is that you can do it anywhere.
If you use these services of Google daily, in a short time you will change your life from a boring work-sleep pattern to an exciting adventure with no limits, borders and chains.
